What is mental health?

Health does not merely mean the absence of disease or physical fitness. It would be more appropriate to define it as complete physical, mental, and social health. Health is the complete state of physical, mental, and social health. Mental health is very important for health care.

Mental health means emotional, mental, and social prosperity. It affects a person’s ability to think, understand, feel and act. Depression is the biggest problem among mental disorders worldwide. It gives rise to many social problems like unemployment, poverty drug addiction, etc.

Various types of mental diseases include Alzheimer’s disease, dementia, anxiety, autism, dyslexia, depression, drug addiction, weak memory, amnesia confusion etc. Its symptoms can influence emotions, thoughts, and behavior. Feeling depressed, lack of ability to concentrate, isolation from friends and other activities, fatigue and sleep problems etc. come under its symptoms.

Why in discussion

According to a report published in the International Journal of Social Psychiatry, every fourth person in India suffers from mental illness like anxiety, stress, depression, etc. According to a 2021 report by UNICEF, about 14 percent of children in the country are suffering from depression. First of all, all of us must become aware of mental wellness to be able to solve this ever-increasing problem.

Many people often start feeling embarrassed considering the problems of a person suffering from mental illness to be ghosts, madness, mental attacks, epilepsy, etc. Consumed by the thought that others may not find out, people secretly resort to exorcism, witchcraft, and tantra mantras.

Mental health

Many people take it so lightly that they resort to quacks. Tantrik and quacks take advantage of this situation, due to which the patient and his family members get stuck in their trap. The result is that the patient’s condition becomes worse day by day and in many cases, the patient even loses his life due to depression.

Some time ago, popular Bollywood actor Sushant Singh Rajput committed suicide in his home in Mumbai India. The reasons for suicide were not clear but the circumstances are being discovered which mentally forced Sushant Singh to commit suicide. This was also the time of Corona epidemic when many people around the world were becoming depressed. In such a situation, it becomes necessary to discuss mental wellness due to which a person starts thinking of committing suicide.

Before discussing mental wellness, we will know what mental wellness is and what factors affect mental health. Besides, WHO’s guidelines and India’s policies and plans related to mental health will also be discussed in this regard.

WHO is working towards effective strategies for disseminating this information to governments and integrating it into policies and plans. In 2013, the World Health Assembly approved the “Comprehensive Mental Health Action Plan for 2013–2020”. Through this scheme, all WHO member countries are committed to improving mental health and achieving global goals.

The overall goal of this action plan is to promote mental well-being, prevent mental disorders, provide care, enhance recovery, promote human rights, and reduce mortality, morbidity, and disability among persons with mental disorders. It mainly focuses on 4 objectives-

To strengthen the information system, evidence, and research system for mental health.

Symptoms

In some cases, a patient suffering from mental illness suddenly falls into unconsciousness. Keeping this fact in mind, the responsibility of not only the families of such patients but also the people around them increases. Many times such patients lose control over themselves even while being conscious. In such a situation, it becomes necessary to take constant care of them so that they can be controlled if they go out of control.

Balance required between neurotransmitters

It is necessary to have a balance between the neurotransmitters that control brain functioning. When the hormones serotonin, dopamine, and endorphin which are normally secreted in the brain become unbalanced, the functioning of the brain gets impaired. This brings changes in the behavior of the person. This is an early symptom of mental illness.

Affects memory

Any type of mental health-related problem including anxiety, stress, and depression comes under the category of mental illness. That is, in the case of mental illness, a person’s mood, memory, and nature are affected and the person has no control over his emotions.
